Bathroom Tile 101

Please, please, please if you ever do or contract out any tile work in your home try to think outside the box. I encourage using extra unordinary tile material or installing it in unusual tile patterns. Or both! Be crazy!!

Just don't do this:

Neither extra unordinary nor unusual. Snooze Fest 2011.

Instead, think like these peeps (and me) did (do).

Classic colors and shapes installed in a clever way. Honeycomb-ish pattern in different colors to create a rug pattern is genius. I'm also a big fan of the ceramic tile wainscotting that's available now. Their use of the black pencil liner continuing on the tub deck face and wall is a great way to create subtle detail throughout the room.

Classy and kinda sexy! Beveled subway tile makes me this close to passing out. I would have preferred to see the bevel tile all over instead of mixing it with the standard edge subway tile.

{A small master bathroom I designed}

Think about creating borders or frames with tile. Or even cabinet backsplashes like above. You're not limited to tile that actually comes in 4"x12" (or similar) border sizes. Many times a client will fall in love with different glass tiles that come in 12"x12" sheets. What they don't fall in love with is the over $30 per square foot pricing! In the above bathroom we took this glass mosaic and nicely requested Mr. Tile Installer Man to rip up the sheets to make borders to frame the vanity mirror and the bathtub. Super pretty glass and natural stone mosaic at a decent price!
Side note...Always be nice to your installers. That way when you ask them to do beyond ridiculous installs they'll just smile and nod their head.

I don't reccommend this for all bathroom applications (grout lines anyone?) but in powder rooms think about using tile not just on the floors or walls. I'm doing a powder room for a client and we're building a floating wood frame for tile. It's going to be accompanied by a glass vessel sink and wall mount faucet.
