I have a decent amount of shoes. About 50% I wear and the other 50% I keep convincing myself I'll wear "someday." I know that someday will most likely never come but in the meantime I needed a functional way to store them all in case I ever do want to wear them. I love the shoe boxes you can get from stores like The Container Store but I don't care for the prices. Around $7.99 for a double shoe box. Say you have 50 pairs of shoes...That's $200. No thanks. Instead I purchased a boatload of the clear shoe bins from Target (99 cents each!), took pictures of each pair of shoes and taped the picture inside the box facing out.
{Like the popcorn ceiling? Sexy, no?}
This way I can easily see what I have and makes outfit planning a tad bit easier. I do wish all the tops of the boxes were white but at the time I wiped out my local Target so I had to go to another store and all they had were blue. Boo. Oh well. Someday I'll switch them out because they really do bother me....
All of my heels are in boxes and I keep the majority of my ballet flats or flat sandels in an organizer like this:

Some of my boots are propped up in this
(I removed a couple of shelves depending on the boot height):
The ones that don't need to keep their shape are placed nicely (and sometimes thrown) in a large basket like this:
I have multiple pieces from the Closetmaid Stackable Storage line. As much as I would love a fancy closet I do rent and I move a lot. I never know what size or shape closet I'm gonna get next! With these pieces I have the flexibility to move them around and change stacking heights based on whatever closet configuration I encounter. If you have a lot of the horizontal shelf storage pieces you can always line the shelves with pretty contact paper to make them feel less laminate/Closetmaid-y. Plus, places like Target and Walmart have these on sale all the time. Very cost effective for those movers and shakers out there.
